12 Natural Sunburn and  Suntan Remedies

When our skin is overexposed to the ultraviolet rays from the scorching sun,sunburn is caused.Other sources of Ultra violet rays like welding arcs,tanning lamps can also cause sunburn.It can also cause skin cancer to some extent.So sunburn should never be taken lightly because it may even lead to death or permanent disability.Fair people are posed at a greater risk as compared to dark skin toned people.


Lets look at some other causes of suntan-Melanin which is present beneath our skin protects our skin from harmful ultra violet rays.But when the amount of ultra violet rays exposure exceeds to a high level ability of melanin to protect our skin.this results in suntan.Our skin is most exposed to scorching skin while working outdoors, swimming, skiing and hiking thereby increasing our chances of getting sunburned.Certain factors like birth control pills and antibacterial agents used in soaps and other cosmetic stuff makes our skin more prone to sunburn.

Now lets talk about few natural simple remedies for sunburn,Following these simple remedies can help to treat your itchy, irritated sunburned skin.


  • Applying Buttermilk with Tomato juice or pulp on the affected areas is the best & effective remedie for sunburn.

  •  Using Curd( yogurt) with some Lemon juice can help to relieve sunburn on skin.

  • Apply aloe vera gel or vinegar on the affected skin,it will stop the inflammation and the pain associated.

  • Avoid products made from benzocaine, lidocaine and petroleum jelly.

  • Rub some pure mustard oil on the affected skin and allow it get absorbed,doing this would take out the heat from skin.

  • Cut some cucumber slices and rub them on the affected area.

  • Before bathing, put some baking powder to the bath water,it would help to soothe the burnt,irritated skin.

  • Apply some lavender essential oil or peppermint oil on the burnt skin or take herbal baths using these oils.You can also take Epsom salt and ice compress.


  • Apply some apple cider vinegar to the burnt skin using a cotton ball,this remedy will also help to relieve pain and itchiness.

  • Grate some potato slices and apply them on the burnt. Starch from the potatoes will soothe the burnt skin.

  • Antioxidants like Vit E and C are very useful in curing sunburn.Hence include more of foods rich in Vit E and C in your diet.

  • Eats lots of fruits,they will provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals.Also to keep the body hydrated and compensate for the lost fluids,drink plenty of water and fluids.

  • Make sure while going outdoors wear good quality shades/sunglasses and apply good quality sunscreen creams whose SPF is 30 and above.Use gentle body wash or liquid soaps to wash sunburn.
